Risks in aquaculture

The worldwide farming of water animals leads to large-scale animal welfare risks. In 2018, about 250 to 408 billion individuals were farmed in aquaculture, far more than all farmed land animals worldwide; about 24 to 32% were vertebrates. Overall, it concerned 408 species, while there is little in-depth animal welfare knowledge on a majority of them. “Specialized welfare information was available for 84 species, only 30% of individuals.”
