Plant-based nutrition
In terms of nutrients, “vegan diets are usually higher in dietary fiber, magnesium, vitamins C and E, [and] iron.” On the contrary, certain nutrients such as fatty acids (omega 3), vitamin B12, vitamin D and calcium can be traditionally found in animal-based products like fish, meat and dairy. Nevertheless, with fortified foods, supplements, seeds and nuts, it is still possible to maintain a HPBD. The aforementioned nutrients are not necessarily animal-based; for instance omega 3 originates from algae. Also, with a sufficient intake of calcium there is no increased risk of bone fracture among vegans.
