Carnism

Cognitive dissonance – knowing something but not acting upon it – is one of three pillars of carnism, the belief system that enables the consumption of animal-based products. It is an ideology that is culturally enforced and is no more or less of an ideology than veganism. The other pillar concerns invisibility; nearly all farmed animals live and are killed without average citizens observing it. The final pillar concerns justification. However, it can be argued that consuming animal-based products in contemporary society is not normal, natural or necessary (the three Ns).
